Is an altered state of consciousness. Which is to say that it is not our normal waking state of consciousness. Dreams are an altered state of consciousness. Our state of dreaming and AP's are very closely related states. Anyone can learn to astral project. It takes some time and some knowledge, and thats what I am going to try to relate to you here in this very article. So, if your interested in learning, read on. Please follow along so your out of body experience (OOBE) is safe and no psychological danger will evolve from your travels. It is very important that you read this in its entirety. You will need to learn and understand it all in order to have a safe OOBE. I need to stress this point, astral projection is only dangerous if you are ignorant about what is going on. You have to realize now that astral projection will take you into realms where the subjective becomes ABSOLUTELY REAL. All your ideas, fears, fantasies, become real things "outside" of you when you project. When you project, you will be somewhere, and in this somewhere (whether we call it a "plane" or whatever) all the things you think are subjective will become objective! When you astral project, you will confront yourself, your own personality, in ways that are totally different than how you relate to yourself when awake here in the physical plane. For example, if you have phobias in your personality, these may become monsters that try to attack you in your astral projection. Such an experience will more likely than not scare the crap out of you, and if you don't understand what's going on, such an experience may completely scare you away from astral projecting ever again. So, its EXTREMELY important that you understand that, in a sense, during a projection, your personality is "outside" of you, and not "inside" of you as it appears to be here in the physical world. In a very strong sense, astral projecting is a form of self-therapy. Most likely, we could all use a good dose of that from time to time. The "dweller on the threshold" is a term used for things of your own creation. This is what you will first encounter when you initially begin to astral project. This "dweller" is you. The good, the bad, and the ugly, and, all your fears and phobias. You need to understand that this is YOU and there isn't anything to be afraid of because it IS you. You will encounter all the negative elements of yourself. Again understanding this is very necessarily for you to go on. You are able to banish those fears simply understanding them for what they are. Once you confront these negative aspects of yourself, they will disappear and you will have grown with new self-insight. It takes will-power to confront these things in yourself, and it takes wisdom and compassion to see them for what they are and to accept them. Anyone that uses astral projection will very likely be confronted with the "dweller on the threshold". As you grow and get past this, your experiences on the planes will not be as contaminated by personal factors. As the personal factors become less a part of your astral projection experiences, then your experiences there will reflect more clearly these planes as they objectively exist, uncontaminated by your subconscious influences. This process is like cleaning off a window. The cleaner the window is, the better you can see through it. Likewise, when you project, the cleaner your personality is, the better you will be able to see through it into the planes. Planes, Dimensions, Aethyrs, Lokas, Realms (Or whatever you want to call it). We need to understand that our consciousness transcends our physical body. The universe is a series of planes. Other terms for planes are: "dimensions", "aethyrs", "lokas". "realms". All are the same. I will be using the term "planes" in this article. We are on the physical plane. Thats where we live. Our conscious level. Each plane is a world unto itself. We have the facilities for interacting with a least 4 of these planes. They are called "vehicles" or "bodies". The four planes are the: physical world, astral world, mental world, buddhic world. So, the act of astral projection is, transferring your consciousness to the astral body to explore the astral world. Our physical world only gives us the physical senses of the body. Our ears, eyes, taste, feeling, senses of heat and balance, and smell. There are energies that exist that we cannot perceive with our physical senses and without the help of machines. There are energies that even modern scientists are completely unaware of. Each plane is a world, a giant world full of all kinds of strange and exotic places and creatures with sights and sounds that dwarf anything we know of here in the physical world. Remember the famous Disney movie, Alice in Wonderland? That very well could have been scenes from someones astral travels. These planes are extremely plastic. They are molded by your slightest emotion, desire or thought. The second you think something, a little piece of the mental plane is shaped exactly into your thought pattern, making a thought-form. This is exactly why your initial experiences projecting will be so extremely colored by your personality. There are seven planes, and as I stated previously, humans can access the 4 lowest planes. This is the list:
On the Etheric side of the physical plane, you will be able to see ghost. You in fact will seem like a ghost. No one will see you (except perhaps for psychics). The vibrational level is just a bit higher on the Etheric than that of the physical. It is a bit harder to move in the Etheric plane than that of the astral.
When we go to sleep and dream, it is the astral plane we visit. The only thing is, for most of us most of the time, we are not lucid at the time of the dreaming. So there we think it is just a dream in the dream world. In the astral world there is quite a number of creatures including fairies and devas. You will no doubt see many strange sights. Some of these animals or creatures may even be able to talk.
This plane and the astral plane seem to overlap. You will most likely see numerous thought-forms as you learn to astral project. There is a good chance that you will NOT perceive the mental plane as distinct from the astral plane. It takes a lot of talent to get to the mental plane, so there is a good chance you will never see the stuff that could make you lose your mind. As "human beings" this is the highest plane we can achieve. This plane is in effect the realm of our soul. In our daily lives we use the energies of the Buddhic plane. They are: inspiration, great creativity, compassion, wisdom, will-power. This world "leaks" these into our daily lives. The Buddhic plane is supremely abstract and extremely powerful. It is also very unlikely that you will go to this plane in a projection. Even more skill is needed to focus your consciousness exclusively on the Buddhic plane. It is crucial to learn to access the "energies" of the Buddhic plane in order to succeed in astral projecting. This plane represents everything that makes human live good. The more Buddhic energy you have in your aura the "lighter" you will be in your consciousness, and therefore, you will be able to travel through a broader range of the planes than otherwise. On the other hand, the less Buddhic energy you have in your aura, the harder it will be for you to astral project, and as well, you will project into ugly regions of the planes, and in general, probably hurt yourself in the attempt to project. Maybe not hurt yourself physically, but emotionally and mentally. Getting confused? Stay with me, you'll understand better later on in this article. For now, understand that, the Buddhic plane is related to morals, wisdom and creativity. These are very important qualities no matter what activity you want to undertake. In this regard, astral projection is no exception. You will need moral values to be safe. If you do not have them, than astral projection can be dangerous. Its that simple. Morals in reality are the laws upon which our entire human existence is based. And we need them. Don't worry to much about this. With astral projecting you will find out exactly what YOU need to grow. As we know, we are all unique people, therefor will our projections be unique. The messages they will contain will be EXACTLY what YOU need at whatever stage you are at in your life. Thats it for the planes that we can access now. But the list still goes on. After many incarnations, maybe some day we will move on to the rest of the planes. Maybe?
Now if that wasn't enough, there's more. Each of these 7 planes have 7 subplanes. There are different grades that seem to blend into one another from lowest to highest. The lowest being everything bad or evil in human emotions: hate, anger, lust, etc. to the highest of human emotions: love, kindness, caring, etc. There is every combination possible in between. More on this later. Know you have a rough idea of the 7 major planes of our universe. Now let us look at the "vehicles" or "bodies" we ware for interacting with the planes. Forget about human anatomy. Much of what we have learned in science class falls short here. The bodies fall in line with the 5 planes and are as follows.
We need to view these bodies from two perspectives: 1. in terms of normal waking experience, and 2. in terms of altered states of consciousness. For the physical body, it is the only body we directly perceive while awake in the physical world. And when we are in an altered state of consciousness (such as dreams), we no longer perceive the physical body. When we astral travel, we lose consciousness of your physical body while at the same time gaining consciousness of your astral or Etheric body.
The Etheric body is the basis of all sensation and perception. When you feel something, smell something, taste something or what ever, these sensations are registering in your Etheric body. This is why you do not perceive things happening in the physical plane when you are asleep or unconscious. Therefor it is a mistake to think your physical body perceives things. Your body is like a lens that focuses sensations. These focused sensations then register in your Etheric body, which means they are brought into your awareness. The physical body is a machine thatconveys sensation. The Etheric body is the body that registers and interprets sensation. It is possible to move about in the Etheric body independently from your physical body in an altered state of consciousness. This is very difficult to do though. You can always tell that you are in your Etheric body because you feel very heavy and it is very hard to move. Also, it is likely that if you are in your Etheric body, then you will be in a dark, and sometimes, scary subplane. Have you ever had the experience of waking up in bed and trying to move, or trying to talk but not being able to do so? If so, you might have even felt scared. If this has ever happened to you, what is actually going on here is that you are actually not awake. Instead, you have "woken up" on the Etheric plane in your Etheric body by accident.
Have you ever gotten "vibes" from someone? Like a creepy feeling, or another person uplifts you and makes you feel good, and yet other people seem to drain you of your energy or whatever? If so, you are in actuality sensing that person's astral body. When you get angry, or sad, happy or feel any emotion, you are feeling your own astral body. When you sense these emotions in another person (which is called "empathy") you are feeling that person's astral body. Feeling emotion is not dependent upon having a physical/organic body. After you die you will continue to feel emotions because emotions originate in your astral body. A large majority of your OOBE's will be in your astral body. While you dream, this is the body you use. The world you will be in during astral projection will be very much like the world you're in when you are dreaming.
Shifting the focus of your consciousness to your mental body will allow you to directly perceive the mental plane. Remember, this will require talent and much practice. It is very difficult.
It is very unlikely that you will learn to focus your consciousness onto the Buddhic plane. I don't mean to put negative thoughts out for you, it is just very difficult to do so. Ironically, though this is the hardest to attain, it is the energy you should most desire to attain. Frankly, astral projecting is nothing compared to learning how to have Buddhic energies run through your being. Sum It Up There are 7 planes, each with 7 subplanes. We have bodies for perceiving 4 of these planes. Altered states of consciousness are explained by the fact that we shift our conscious awareness from the physical plane/body to one of our other, nonphysical bodies and perceive events occurring on the respective plane. LD vs AP Ok, we have had a lot of talk about the different worlds/planes and bodies. I want to take a break from all that and tell you a little about what to expect when an OOBE happens and the difference between LD (lucid dream) and AP. LD is when you are asleep and dreaming, (remember, you are already in the astral plane) in your dream you all of a sudden find yourself aware of the fact that you are dreaming. You then can sway your dream the way you want the outcome to go. This is pretty neat in its self when it happens. Usually I do this when I am having a frantic or troublesome dream. My unconscious alerts my conscious and lets me know I need to intervene and change the outcome of the dream. LD = becoming aware. In an AP you are going there aware. I like the way Kristian Kaikkonen Author of Flakes Book about Astral Projection put it. "My little theory is that AP is sort of a wake induced lucid dream. A wake induced lucid dream (WILD) is just what it sounds like, you can make up your own scenarios and so forth. But in an AP you donīt think of any scenarios, you just relax, and when the time comes you are in another state of awareness, and the only scenario that your mind can chew on is your room, and that scenario becomes the LD." To help us understand AP, I would say, AP is a dream in which you are fully aware of your physical life. So, with astral projection, what we are trying to do is "take our waking mind into the dream world and back with us. If you become aware in a dream that you "are" dreaming, then you are "lucid" If you can remember your name and the aspects of your life, then you are astral projecting. If your sill somewhat confused, don't worry about it. When you AP you will then know the difference and understand this better. Here is a link to a book that you may find interesting. Astral Projection for Beginner by McCoy, Edain. Second one down. EP vs AP Ep is Etheric projection. As I said before, this is when you leave your physical body and enter into the Etheric body on the Etheric plane. This is almost the same as the physical vibrational state of your normal physical body. It is like your normal body but no one on the physical plane can see you. So how do you know if your in the Etheric body or the astral body when having an OOBE? The Etheric plane seems to be a lot like the physical plane, while the astral has a feeling of a dream like state. Also as I have said earlier, it is hard to move in the Etheric body as appose to the astral, ware it is much easier. When you AP its like you wake up but are still sleeping. Your mind is alert. Most of the time you will hear a strange buzzing/rushing sound, you then will leave your body. Now, how much cooler is that? Getting ready
Keep a note book next to your bed. Every time you come back from a journey, (return to the physical plane) write down your experiences. Write in detail, trying not to omit anything. Even the smallest segment may turn out to be something. If not, no big deal, you still have a wonderful account of your OOBE. If you wait until morning or the next evening to write down your "trip", you risk the chance of forgetting some detail that could have proven to be of some importance later on. AP is a skill you will have to learn. Some people will learn quickly, others it may take some time. You had to practice to ride a bike or swim, and therefor you will have to practice this also. There are very few people that it came natural. I envy these people. I have to practice and practice with all I do. I am not a natural at anything. But patience is a virtue. Be dedicated and it will come. It is crucial that you hold the correct beliefs. If you really do not think you can do this, then stop reading any further. You cant. If you are a devote Christian who believes in Hell, you just might find yourself in Hell during AP. This could literally scare the "hell" out of you. Remember what you read earlier, Astral projection is a journey of self transformation to some extent or another. Lets now also remember that our dreams and astral projections are very closely related. Our dreams are unconscious astral projections, astral projections are conscious dreams. We all dream every night. Some people say that "they do not dream". In reality they do. We all do, every single night of our lives. Just because you don't always remember them doesn't mean its not happening. There are some different theories or beliefs about what dreams are. The truth being, no one knows for sure what dreams are. Most people do not take dreams seriously. Some try to interpret them with books they buy. I have done this, but I need to point out that most of the books interpretations don't quite fit my lifestyle. I have learned that a few certain symbols for me, mean something "to me". These same symbols may mean something different to someone else, given their upbringing. Right from the start most of us are taught that dreams are not real. As children, we have a nightmare and mom or dad tells us "its ok, it was just a dream, it's not real" or something to that effect. So, right form the start society has given us a bad attitude. You will need to abandon this bad attitude and change your belief system. Look at it this way, when you dream, you are someplace experiencing something. Your dreams are real experiences of your consciousness. believe this, we live two lives. One life we live here in the physical plane. The second life we live in the world where our dreams occur. Both worlds are REAL. Both are very different from each other, but each life is totally and completely real IN ITS OWN TERMS. We can not interpret our dreams in terms of our physical life. Look at space and time in the physical world. They both have definite properties. Our mind and perceptions are conditioned by the properties of space and time as we know them on this plane. We can not see around a corner (space). We can not go backwards in time (time). We take time completely for granted. It is an overpowering factor in our lives. We "know" that time goes forward. We are born, we age, we grow old and die. That is how it is in the physical world. Space and time are not the same when we dream, therefor, it can't be the same in the astral world. This alone will help us to understand our dreams and AP. Just remember that, every plane has its own set of laws of space and time. These are completely natural for that world. We have a hard time remembering all of our dreams, and even if you do remember part of one, that memory usually slips away during our waking hours. We don't take our physical memories to our dreams. With astral projection this is not the case. When we do project we take our physical memory and personality with us. When we come back to the physical world, our memories of the experience comes along too. How great is that? But, let me warn you. As with dreams these memories can also slip away from us as we start concentrating on the day ahead of us. You should relax and think about your projection before you get out of bed. Try to remember every detail, AND WRITE IT DOWN. I promise you, if you don't and you start to have OOBE's, you will be mad at yourself for not listening. Another good practice to get into is, when you lay in bed to go to sleep, tell yourself over and over that you want to remember your dreams and your astral projections. This may help you when you return to he physical world. This is self conditioning. Heck, you can even tell yourself that during the day a few times. It wont hurt. More on that in a bit. Self conditioning. As I said a bit earlier, Tell yourself before sleeping that you want to remember and that you want to AP. If you keep telling yourself something, so will it be. You are in effect "training yourself". Even during the day while your awake, tell yourself things like: I will astral project, I am learning how to do this and I will project. Use any other terms that fit you. Be sincere in this and believe it. You have to believe that it is possible to do it. If you have any doubt, it will be harder to do, if not impossible for you. You will need the desire to have OOBE's. That desire will fuel your efforts. Desire is very strong in humans and if you truly desire something it is much easer to achieve. Don't get frustrated if it takes some time to accomplish this feat. Just keep the desire, the need, and the patients, it will come. Keep your mind on track. Have a one track mind. Live, eat, sleep astral projection. Read as much as you can about this astral projection. Everyone will have ideas of there own. As you absorb all this information you are conditioning your mind to AP. What can you do? While you are projecting, you can walk around, float, fly, or just stand there. You will be able to talk to people and even some animals. One of the main things I have found is that I am in aw as to where I am. I love to just check out my surroundings. Once I was flyings over some mountains, just examining the crevices. I was very high up and just floating and flying. I came upon a eagles nest. The mother eagle was in it. I found this to be most impressive. Then, (being untrained at the art of AP) somewhere in my mind a thought of danger. Danger being face to face with this magnificent creature. The talons on it were long and very sharp looking. I thought "this thing could rip my face off". Thats all it took. The next thing I knew, I was back in my bed awake and mad at myself for "freaking out". This was such an awesome experience to see the mountains from this vantage point.Note: This happened a long time ago. I did not write it down. Shame on me. I know can't remember if there were baby eagles in the nest or not. I think so, but I'm not sure. Ok, now what you have been waiting for. HOW TO ASTRAL PROJECT There are different methods used for astral projection. I will explain a few to you. This should get you on your way to a fantastic experience. Using Our Dreams To AP We can use are dreams as a diving board for astral projection. There are triggers in our dreams that we can learn to recognize. We just need to know about them and how to use them. First, as we know, when we are dreaming, things just aren't real. Things occur in our dreams that are impossible in our waking life. Strange things. Perhaps, your in your house but it's not your house at all. Its different. The rooms are to big or to small. Maybe there are more rooms than should be. Its full of birds, they talk, they go to you closet and put your cloths on. Anything. Whatever weird or different is a trigger. You will need to condition yourself to recognize these triggers. When you see something odd or out of place, weird, etc. us this circumstance to tell yourself that you are in the dream world. Think to yourself throughout the day and just before bed that, when you see these odd things in your dreams you will become aware that you're dreaming. Again, repetition, eventually it will happen for you. Some people report that when this happens to them, they get a strange feeling in there bodies, tingling, hear some sort of whooshing sound. I guess there is not an explanation for this. I think maybe its just a signal for the brain to realize you are changing worlds. Therefor your body also changes for that world. Who knows, just my theory. It is very easy to just wake up when you first start to "transform". You are aware of what is happening and you are so excited by this (you have been waiting for so long) that you just excite yourself awake. Thats ok. It is a great sign for you that you "were" there. Just keep practicing. Tell yourself that you wont get so excited next time and you will stay in the dream world longer. Maybe, you should start this from the beginning and it might not happen at all. Try it. Who know? Let summerize what we have learned.
Using The Trance Methods Well, we have learned so far about using our dreams to enter into the astral plane. This idea works and works great for some of us. Some people just cant seem to get it though. Good thing there are other ways to achieve our desires. That is what this chapter is all about. Using the trance method to get from one world/plane to another. Some know this term as Transcendental Meditation, or just meditation, or hypnosis. Here, we are going to learn how to use this technique to AP. AP this way is more direct than using our dreams. We do it while we are awake. WOW, really. Yes, really. When you leave your physical body, you will be totally aware, highly conscious of the act of dissociating from the physical world. The experience will be the same as being lucid in a dream. You just took a different path to get there. Using this method really gives the term "out of body experience" some meaning compared to astral projection. You feel your consciousness dissociate from your physical body. How to do it? First you will lay down and relax. Deeply relax. You will not fall asleep though. (hopefully) You will learn to let your body fall to sleep, but not your mind. Then you will feel yourself slip or push out of your body. Now when this happens you will be either in one of the planes (described "way" above), or you will be in a void. You will then have some great adventures. It can be like taking a trip and not leaving the house. You will remain in this state until some outside (physical) interference disturbs you "awake". You are also very capable of waking yourself up. You may need to go to the bathroom, pick up the kids, or maybe you are in a situation in you OOB that is to scary or hurtful for you. By all means, become aware of you physical self. Putting yourself into a trance What you will see
Let me point out that this could have just happened while you were relaxing. You may not even had clairvoyant images. Every one is different and every projection is different. The big thing now is Do Not Get Startled. Sometimes when this happens you will be in darkness, the "void" I mentioned earlier. If you find yourself in the void you can stay or you can go. You can fly around in it if you so chose, or do summer salts. You can do what ever you want there, It is a nice quiet place. Or you can leave it too when ever you want. You have no body at the moment. You will want to materialize one. Try looking at your hands. Try to bring them up to your face ware you "should" see them. Their not there. Yet. As you look for them, you will see them form right in front of you. Your hands, arms, legs etc. until you have all the parts you want. You are tuning in to a subplane. The next thing you'll know is that you are somewhere. Somewhere in the planes. That is one way to get out of the void. Another is to spin yourself around like a top. Just spin as fast as you can and you should appear "somewhere". If it's not the void where you land, it could be anywhere. And I do mean anywhere. You can "appear" in one of the planes or a subplanes. Somewhere in the dream world, fully aware. You could land in your room, someone else's house, it my be somewhere you recognize, or not. Where ever it is, know this, you will be astral traveling. As you practice this method and get more familiar with it, you will be able to tell when the time is right for leaving your body. You will be able to push yourself or jump instead of having to wait for the time that you will slip or fall away. The feeling listed above are examples of what could happen. As I said before, everyone is different and everyone perceives things in a different manner. I needed a place to start you at and some suggestions to help you understand what it could be like for you. For me on occasion, I hear a buzzing sound and my body feels thick and seems to vibrate. But it is not actually vibrating. See, there was another example for you. So it could go any number of ways for you. ![]() ![]() Visualization Methods Things That Could Help Or Not. Over Coming Fear When you get there. During an OOBE, you don't always get to go ware you want. Sometimes you are just pulled to one place or another. It will seam as if you don't have any control of this. As with real life, sometimes things just happen that wasn't planned. I believe that as far as the astral world goes, somewhere in your mind you do know what is happening. You are the conductor of your world whether you are aware of it or not. Your psychic abilities will be at max power. During an OOBE, this ability will come automatically. All the psychic powers will be there for you to use. Mind reading, psychokinesis, visions, memories of past and "future" lives. You will even on occasion have an OOBE during an OOBE. This is really a weird sensation. It has happened to me a few times and the felling it left me with was quite strange. You will no doubt be using these powers without even realizing that they are psychic powers. They are all "natural" in an OOBE. Now, seeing you now this, you can understand when you are using these powers that indeed, they are "powers". Try and experiment with them while OOB. When you have dreams at night, you use these psychic powers also. You just never thought of them as such. It was just a dream, right. Wrong. You are on the astral plane while dreaming, you just haven't become lucid. That is a very good reason to keep your dream journal. You will be able to start recognizing the psychic powers while dreaming. The Subplanes
