Finding Hunting Places.
A basic guide to paranormal investigation.

So how do you find haunted places to investigate?

All it take is a little research and some time.
Before you set out in your car for a cross country journey to the famous places we have all heard about, try looking in your own local area.
Try some of these out to see what you come up with.
  1. Do a google search for haunted places in your area. Use your own city, state or county. Use words such as ghost, haunted, paranormal, supernatural. Its quite possible that your results could be inaccurate. Not all will really have ghost, but you wont know for sure unless you do an investigation.

  2. Look in your local library. Do a background check on the geographical area. Many times towns have changed or are not there anymore. Example: I live in a "township" out in the country. There isn't a town here anymore but the name lives on. Many, many years ago the town did exist, only about 3-4 miles form my home now. It was a booming town for its time. The logging mills were strong and many people thrived on the wood industry. Logs were moved down the rivers, mail was brought in by horses, even the famous Dillanger was know to reside in the area. There are only a few old buildings left scattered about. If you took a drive around the area, you would never have guessed there was once a town.

I found this information at the library while doing a search on a haunted picture I have in my possession. The area is rich with paranormal activity. Check the history of the area.

Many library's have books on haunted places or a whole paranormal section.

  3. Talk to people in your area. The elderly that have spent most of their lives in the area can give you a tremendous amount of historical facts. And besides that, it's fun just to talk to them. They know so much.

  4. Police officers can also have great information for you. They are aware of the complaint calls that come in as to strange goings on. Lights flickering, noises, even apparitions. Many officers are skeptics but they still cannot explain what the odd activity was.

  5. Oddly school children, high school students and collage kids often know of rumour haunted places in the area.
  6. The newspapers. (check at the library again) Look particularly for the weeks just before Halloween. Many will have a special feature on haunted places.

Classic haunted places to check:

  • Everyone thinks of cemeteries to be haunted. In fact they are usually mildly haunted. The best ones to check would be the older ones from the 19th century and earlier. The older, the better results you should get. Keep in mind that most cemeteries are closed from dusk to dawn. How ironic. Click here for best times to go ghost hunting. Do not break in. Maybe you could talk the caretaker into giving you permission to set up an investigation. Try a search on google for cemeteries in your area. I know I can always find cemeteries that are for the most abandoned or have no hour limitations. I like these the best.

  • Abandoned buildings could be a good bet. Think about it a minute. Why would someone abandoned a premise without good reason. Could the reason be "a haunting"? You'll probably have to go to the city or check a plot book to track down the owner so you can get permission to enter. Again, do not trespass. You could find yourself in awful trouble.

  • Theaters with a stage were people have performed on are very popular haunts. Many times these ghost are good timers or fun ghost. Look particularly on the stage, backstage, in the audience, just outside the auditorium doors, and in the audience. Often times you'll find a ghost or two at rehearsals. Also check the balcony.

  • Colleges are a good bet and also some schools. Poltergeist activity seems to be reported most often. Talk to the students there and use of a EMF meter is very helpful. Interestingly, tonight (as I write this) on the news a favorite historical theater I grew up with and was a member of for a short time, is undergoing once again a massive restoration. In fact its almost done. I wonder if the builders have any stories. I should take a road trip to my home town and do some investigating. It is a well know haunted theater. Many ghost frequent this spot. Read about it here. The Grand Opera House in Oshkosh, WI. a real must see.

  • I do not advise doing an investigation of a private home unless its a family member or close friend. Save this for the professionals or wait until you are a professional yourself.
